County Championship Round 2 – 2025

Round 2 saw positively hot days for the first 2 of this round, most definitely at Trent Bridge where I found myself. I’m staring to write ups Division 1 at the end of Day 3, listening to The Masters on Radio 5 Live! There was 1 positive result in each Division on Day 1.

Division 1

Durham v Warwickshire – Banks Homes Riverside, Chester-le-Street. Alex Lees won the toss for Durham and elected to bat. Warwickshire won by 1 Wicket.

Durham 387 All Out & 276 for 8 dec, Warwickshire 325 All Out & 344 for 9

Another Durham innings another Century made, Durham lost Alex Lees in the first over and were 0 for 1. His fellow Opener Ben McKinney and Another Durham innings another Century made, Durham lost Alex Lees in the first over and were 0 for 1. His fellow Opener Ben McKinney and put on 78 for the 2nd wicket Emilio Gay put on 78 for the 2nd wicket, Gay scored scored 41. McKinney then put on 96 with David Bedingham with Bedingham making 58 from 104 balls. McKinney’s was the 8th wicket to fall, but not before he and Matthew Potts had put on 120 for the wicket. McKinney scored 153 from 244 balls. Potts made 70 from 120 balls. Durham batted for 107.5 overs and scored 387.

Warwicks made 57 for their first wicket and had a number of good partnerships. With Keeper Kai Smith and Ethan Bamber putting on 115 for the 7th wicket. Smith top scored with 79 from 127 balls and Booth made 58 from 126 balls. Warwicks were bowled out in 92.1 overs.

Ben Raine top scored for Durham in their 2nd innings with 81 from 141 balls. They batted for 77 overs, scoring 276 for 8 before the declaration came. Michael Booth took 4 for 66 in his 18 overs. Ethan Bamber and Vishwa Fernando were left to try to get the game won for Warwicks! And that they did! Bamber scored 30 from 46 balls and Fernando a vital 5, I believe there weer 6 overs left in the day! A memorable win for the visitors.

Nottinghamshire v Essex – Trent Bridge, Notts. Tom Westley won the toss for Essex and put Notts in to bat. Match Drawn

Notts 347 All Out & 385 All Out , Essex 367 All Out & 106 for 1

Notts were in some trouble in the first session on Day 1, as they fell to 78 for 5. I was there for the first 2 days sat in glorious sunshine. 2 Notts fans sat behind me on that first morning said they are used to teams batting all afternoon without wickets falling, those 5 first session wickets were important ones! Notts were 1 for 1, then 4 for 2! In came Keeper Kyle Verryenne at 6, in the 22nd over. He batted until the end of the Notts innings which was 104 overs in all. He was dropped early in his innings but then played an excellent innings finishing on 128* from 242 balls, early on Day 2. He and Lyndon James put on 89 for the 6th wicket, James scored 45. Fergus O’Neill joined Verryenne and they put on 80 for the 7th wicket. O’Neill scored 42. 17 year old Farham Ahmed came in at 10, and played an excellent innings, he faced 91 balls, many of which were with the 2nd new ball. He scored 31, and was impressive in his confidence facing the 2 Essex opening bowlers. Sam Cook took 4 for 44 in his 25 overs. Notts batted for 104 overs, falling just short of the 3rd batting bonus point with 347.

Essex lost 2 early wickets and were 48 for 2, with both Charlie Allison and Tom Westley being trapped LBW. Opener Paul Walter and Jordan Cox put on 123 for the 3rd wicket. Ahmed came into the bowling discussion here as Walter hit him for 2 huge Sixes, he went for a 3rd and was caught by Joe Clarke at slip. Walter scored 76 from 129 balls. I left at tea time on Day 2 to head to the theatre in Cambridge. Cox was out for 82 from 133 balls. Matt Critchley and Cox were batting when I left, Critchley made 52 from 1155 balls. Essex were bowled out in 105.4 overs for 367.

The Notts openers had a much better time of it in their 2nd innings, putting on 113 for the 1st wicket. Ben Slater scored 67 from 114 Balls. Haseeb Hameed and Jack Haynes put on 83 for the 4th wicket. Hameed scored 92 from 171 balls and Haynes finished Day 3 on 49*. Notts faced 74 overs and finished the day on 233 for 5, a lead of 213. Notts batted on on Day 4, Haynes saw 3 batters come and go for 15 runs. He and Brett Hutton then put on 77 for the 9th wicket, the Essex bowlers letting things run away again. Hutton scored 38 from 90 balls. Dillon Pennington then stayed with Haynes, they put on 66 for the final wicket. Haynes was the last to fall, he’d made 142 from 214 balls. Notts scored 385 in 115.1 overs.

Essex batted for 31 overs before the Draw was declared, Walter adding another 41 to his tally for the game.

Surrey v Hampshire – The Kia Oval – London. Ben Brown won the toss for Hants and put Surrey in to bat. Match Drawn.

Surrey 253 All Out & 342 for 9 dec, Hampshire 219 All Out & 300 for 5

Surrey lost Rory Burns in the 2nd over and were 3 for 1, then Ollie Pope in the 9th to go 18 for 2. Jamie Smith joined Dom Sibley and the pair put on 78 for the 3rd wicket. Smith made 39. Sibley carried his bat and was 100* from 217 balls at the end of the innings. Surrey were bowled out in 77.3 overs for 253. Brad Wheal took 4 for 65 in his 19.3 overs.

Hants lost opener Fletcha Middleton in tech 2nd over and were 6 for 1. Mark Stoneman and Nick Gubbins put on 78 for the 2nd wicket. Tom Prest in at 5 top scored with 44 from 81 balls. Hants were bowled out in 69.2 overs for 219.

The Oval was my destination for Day 3 and I saw Dom Sibley lift his bat to acknowledge his second Century of the match. He and Ollie Pope put on 100 for the 2nd wicket, Pope made 65 from 109 balls and was out before I arrived. Jamie Smith and Sibley put on 108 for the 3rd wicket, Sibley scored 105 from 223 balls. Smith went on to score 84 from 113 balls. Surrey batted for 93 overs and were 342 for 9 when Burns declared. Hants had a field set for a good spell where every fielder was on the boundary, a strange tactic!

Hants faced 16 overs and were 35 for 3 at the end of the day. The light meters had been in and out of the umpire’s pockets and the ‘quicks’. were stood down, with Rory Burns bowling a maiden! Hants started Day 4 trailing by 342. Fletcha Middleton and Nick Gubbins put on 74 for the 4th wicket. Middleton was out for 42. Gubbins then shared a partnership of 143 with Toby Albert. Gubbins was out for 117 from 247 balls and Albert went on tp make 78 from 182 balls. Bad light stopped play and the captains shook hands as the game was declared a draw.

Yorkshire v Worcestershire – Headingely, Leeds. Brett D’Oliveira won the toss for Worcs and put Yorkshire in to bat. Yorkshire won by 504 runs.

Yorkshire 456 All Out & 315 for 4, Worcestershire 162 All Out & 105 All Out

Yorkshire built their innings steadily, with 55 on the board for the 1st wicket, them 68 for the 2nd. Adam Lyth, opening scored 67 from 118 balls. George Hill and Dawid Milan put on 123 for the 5th wicket. Hill made 63 from 82 ball. Milan went on to score 98 from 133 balls. Ben Coad and Jordan Thompson put on 75 for the 9th wicket. Coad scored 31 and Thompson went on the score 7 from 58 balls. Yorkshire were bowled out for 456 in 101.2 overs.

Worcs made 90 for the 1st wicket in 30 overs, In the next 36.1 overs they were bowled out for just 162, losing 9 wickets for just 72 runs. Opener Jake Libby scored 53 of the 162. Ben Coad took 4 for 39 in his 15.3 overs.

Looking at Yorkshire’s 2nd innings, I can only presume Dom Bess came in as Night Watch? Either way he 107 from 117 balls! Bess and Malan put on 100 for the 4th wicket. Malan was 76* from 64 balls when Yorkshire declared on 315 for 4.

Worcs facing a huge uphill battle had no heroics this week, they were bowled out in joy 37.1 overs for 105. Opener and Keeper Gareth Roderick top scored with just 27! George Hill took 4 for 23 in his 7.1 overs.

Division 2

Kent v Middlesex – The Spitfire Fire Ground, Canterbury. Daniel Bell-Drummond won the toss for Kent and put Middlesex in to bat. Kent won by 8 Wickets.

Middlesex 222 All Out & 311 All Out, Kent 218 All Out & 316 for 2

Middlesex were bowled out in 60.3 overs, Keeper Jack Davies top scored with 47 as wickets fell steadily.

Kent’s 1st innings was even shorter, just 49 overs. Keeper Harry Finch and Grant Stewart put on 101 for the 78th wicket, with Finch scoring 52 from 71 balls, and Stewart 56 from 56 balls. Blake Cullen took 4 for 60 in 11 overs. Kent were behind, by 4.

Middlesex made a better fist of things in their 2nd innings, in spite of being 14 for 2. Lees du Plooy and Stevie Eskinazi put on 56 for the 4th wicket. Keeper Jack Davies and Ben Geddes put on 90 for the 6th wicket. Geddes scored 75 from 142 balls. Zafar Gohar in at 9 scored 57 from 85 balls as Middlesex batted for 101.4 overs, scoring 311, a lead of 315.

The Kent openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Compton put on 91 for the 1st wicket. Crawley scored 58 from 66 balls. Daniel Bell-Drummond was out first ball. Tawanda Muyeye joined Compton and the pair put on the 225 needed to get the match won, Compton made 124* from 196 Balls, Muyeye a quicker 125 from 127 balls. Kent batted for 64.4 overs and scored 316 for 2.

Gloucestershire v Glamorgan – Sat Unique Ground, Bristol. Sam Northeast won the toss for Glamorgan and put Gloucs in to bat. Match Drawn.

Glamorgan 385 All Out & 288 for 4, Gloucestershire 546 All Out

Opener Cameron Bancroft and Ollie Price, in at 3 put on 230 for the 2nd wicket. Price scored 101 from 222 balls. Bancroft and Miles Hammond then put on 74 for the 3rd wicket. Bancroft scored 163 from 267 balls. Hammond made 54 from 75 balls. Gloucs batted for 137.5 overs and scored 546.

Glamorgan lost wickets steadily until Keeper Chris Cooke and Colin Ingram put on 129 for the 6th wicket. Cooke made 56 from 108 balls and Ingram 1033 from 174 balls. Glamorgan batted for 107.5 overs, scoring 385. Zaman Akhter took 5 for 85 in his 20.5 overs.

Glamorgan were asked to follow on and batted for 88.4 overs. Eddie Byrom and Zain ul Hassan put on 109 for the 1st wicket. Byrom scored 48 and ul Hassan 55 from 121 balls. Colin Ingram and Kiran Carlson put on 117 for the 4th wicket. Carlson scored 49 and Ingram 77 from 162 balls. The match was declared a draw with Glamorgan on 288 for 4.

Lancashire v Northamptonshire – Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. Keaton Jennings won the toss for Lancs and put Northants in to bat. Match Drawn.

Northamptonshire 496 All Out, Lancs 228 All Out & 351 for 9

Northants lost Ricardo Vasconcelos early and were 23 for 1. Opener Luke Proctor and James Sales put on 104 for the 4th wicket. Proctor scored 64 from 133 balls and Sales went on to score 92 from 144 balls, he and Saif Zaib put on 97 for the 5th wicket. Zaib and Keeper Lewis McManus put on 107 for the 7th wicket. Zaib scored 116 from 170 balls and McManus 95 from 207 balls. McManus had put on 81 for the 9th wicket with Calvin Harrison who scored 56 from 98 balls. Northants batted for 143.1 overs, scoring 496.

Lancashire lost 2 early wickets and were 44 for 2. Keaton Jennings and Marcus Harris put on 84 for the 3rd wicket. Harris scored 43. Jenning’s was the 7th wicket to fall, he’d scored 96 from 218 balls. Calvin Harrison took 4 for 34 in his 19 overs.

Lancashire were asked to follow on and were 0 for 1! Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon put on 119 for the 2nd wicket. Jennings scored 49. Bohannon and Marcus Harris then put on 94 for the 4th wicket. Bohannon made 155 from 342 balls, Harris scored 50 from 95 balls. Northants came close to a win, but Lancs held out, batting for 149 overs to save the draw.

Leicestershire v Derbyshire – Uptonsteel County Ground, Leicester. Wayne Madsen won the toss for Derbys and put Leics in to bat. Match Drawn.

Leicestershire 484 All Out & 357 for 9 dec, Derbyshire 393 All Out & 305 for 4

After being 26 for 1, Sol Budinger and Ian Holland put on 103 for the 2nd wicket. Budinger scored 81 from 82 balls. Holland and Lewis Hill then put on 55 for the 3rd wicket, Hill scored 24 and Holland scored 74 from 139 balls. Captain Peter Handscomb and Keeper Ben Cox put on 97 for the 6th wicket. Handscomb scored 63 from 101 balls. Logan van Beek who’d come in at 8 and Tom Scriven I at 11 put on 83 for the final wicket. van Beek was 82* from 103 balls as Northants scored 484 in 107.2 overs.

Derbyshire were 7 for 2 losing regular wickets, they fell to 139 for 6. Anuj Dal and Martin Andersson put in 110 for the 7th wicket. Dal scored 43 and Andersson went on to score 101 from 140 balls. Derbys scored 393 in 95.3 overs.

Leics 2nd innings started with a partnership of 132 for the 1st wicket, then lost the next 2 wickets for 6 runs. Rehan Ahmed scored 77 from 59 balls, a talented pair of brothers, having watched Farhan at Trent Bridge! This innings lasted for 80 overs and Leics made 357 for 9, then declared.

Derbyshire batted for 80 overs before the match was declared a draw. They fell to 68 for 2 before Caleb Jewell and Wayne Madsen put on 87 for the 3rd wicket. Jewell scored 73 from 100 balls. Madsen went on to score 96 from 114 balls and he shared a partnership of 76 with Keeper Brooke Guest who went on to score 68 from 120 balls. Derbys scored 305 for 4.
