Division 1
I spent Day 1 of this round at the Oval and saw a good day of cricket, I’m starting to write on the morning of Day 2. Every team in Division 1 that batted first was bowled out on Day 1. 2 Division 1 matches were finished on Day 3 as were 2 Division 2 games.
Durham v Somerset – Banks Homes Riverside, Chester-le-Street. Alex Lees won the toss for Durham and elected to bat. Somerset won by 78 Wickets.
Durham 277 All Out & 159 All Out Somerset 172 All Out & 267 for 3
Alex Lees was out on the first ball of the innings, bowled by Matt Henry, a start he’ll want ti forget! Ben McKinney and Emilio Gay then put on 65 for the 2nd wicket. Keeper Ollie Robinson and Colin Ackermann then put on 56 for the 5th wicket. Robinson scored 52 from 55 balls, his was the highest score in an innings that lasted 77 overs as Durham were bowled out for 277. Matt Henry took 4 for 60.
Somerset faced 18 overs on Day 1 and were 69 for 3 having lost Lewis Gregory in the 4th over. I presume Jack Leach came in as a Night Watch, he top scored with 30 as Somerset were bowled out in juts 38.4 overs for 172. Mitchell Killeen, who was on debut, took 5 for 36 in his 10 overs! Some start to his FC career!
No high scoring Durham players this week! they were bowled out for 159 in 43 overs. Alex Lees had a slightly better time in this innings, he top scored with with 35. The 4 bowlers shared the wickets.
With 265 required to win this match, Somerset were 71 for 1 at the end of Day 2 after facing 22 overs. Somerset required another 55.1 overs on Day 3. Tom Lammonby and James Rew put on 66 for the 3r dan final wicket. Lammonby scored 104 from 161 balls in a winnings cause.
Hampshire v Sussex – Utilita Bowl, Southampton. Ben Brown won the toss for Hampshire and elected to bat. Sussex won by 9 Wickets.
Hampshire 154 All Out & 165 All Out, Sussex 297 All Out & 23 for 1
Hampshire opener Mark Stoneman was out for a Duck on the 4th ball of the game. Hants were 0 for 1. Wickets fell steadily and they were bowled out in 52.3 overs for 154. Keeper and Captain Ben Brown scored 53 of those runs. There were no Extras conceded by Sussex. Henry Crocombe took 4 for 27.
As I write Sussex are 116 for 5, they were 86 for 5 on Day 1. Finn Hudson-Prentice and Captain and Keeper John Simpson put on 173 for the 6th wicket. Hudson-Prentice scored 74 from 176 balls and Simpson was 106* from 225 balls at the end of the innings. Sussex scored 297 in their 109 overs.
In the 34 overs Hampshire faced on Day 2 they made 114 for the loss of 5 wickets. Liam Dawson was on 35* at the end of the day. Hampshire were still trailing by 29. Hampshire were bowled out in a total of 47 overs for 165. Dawson finished on 48 from 67 balls. Jack Carson took 5 for 26 in his 10 overs.
Sussex needed just 4.4 overs to get the win and were 23 for 1.
Surrey v Essex – The Oval, London. Rory Burns won the toss for Surrey and put Essex in to bat. Match Drawn.
Essex 217 All Out & 479 All Out, Surrey 279 All Out & 289 for 7
On Day 1 at The Oval, just as I said the words this is one of Essex’s best opening partnerships this season Dean Elgar edged a Sam Curran ball to Dom Sibley and Essex were 60 for 1. The Surrey bowlers had a green wicket to bowl on and all bowled well. Essex fell too 95 for 4. Michael Pepper played a very mature innings to top score with 75 from 94 balls, before he hooked a ball to Sam Curran from the bowling of Jamie Overton, who he’s hit for 6 a couple of overs earlier. Essex were bowled out for 217 in 62.2 overs.







Surrey Captain and Opener Rory Burns was out in the 7th over. New Overseas signing Kurtis Patterson scored 51 from 71 balls before Paul Walter took a great slips Cath from the bowling of Jamie Porter. Nigh Watch Tom Lawes was bowled by a snorter of a ball from Kasun Rajitha. Surrey were 94 for 3 at the end of Day 1. Surrey fell to 144 for 7, but Sam Curran who came in at 5 and Jordan Clarke put on 82 for the 8th wicket.. Curran scored 70 from 83 balls and Clark scored 54 from 66 balls. Kasun Rajitha took 5 for 87 in his 22 overs. Surrey were bowled out for 279 in 72.4 overs.
Essex had a somewhat better start to their 2nd innings, Paul Walter scored 118 from 147 balls and he and Dean Elgar put on 188 for the 1st wicket. Simon Harmer came and went as Night Watch and Essex were 191 for 2 from 54 overs at the end of Day 2. Elgar was on 60*. That good start carried on during Day 3. Elgar was out for 64 from 184 balls, Captain Tom Westley and Charlie Allison put on 80 for the 4th wicket. Westley made 50 from 114 balls. Allison was joined by a fellow 20 year old Noah Thain and the pair put on 116 for the 6th wicket. Allison made his maiden first class century and ended with 140 from 235 balls, a brilliant effort! Thain scored 50 from 93 balls. Essex faced 139.1 overs and scored 479.
Surrey faced 8 overs on Day 3 and were 32 for no wicket. Quite amazingly both Surrey openers were stumped by Michael Pepper from the bowling of Simon Harmer. They put on 76 for the 1st wicket, Rory Burns was out for 39 and Dom Sibley 40. Sam Curran put a spanner in the Essex works again, he and Craig Overton put on 71 for the 6th wicket. Curran made 77 from 121 balls, batting for nearly 2.5 hours. Overton was out on the last ball of the day for 47. 76 overs were bowled on Day 4 as weather intervened. Jamie Porter took 5 for 88 in his 27 overs. 2 matches and 2 draws between these teams this year.
Worcestershire v Warwickshire – Visit Worcestershire New Road, Worcester. Alex Davies won the toss and elected to bat. Match Drawn.
Warwickshire 227 All Out & 280 All Out, Worcestershire 181 All Out & 181 for 8
There was another early wicket, as Rob Yates was out on the 7th ball of the match. Captain and Opener Alex Davies and Tom Latham put on 47 for the 2nd wicket. Latham and Sam Hain then shared a 3rd wicket partnership of 109. Latham scored 59 from 153 balls. Hain’s was the 6th wicket to fall, he made 86 from 152 balls. Warwickshire were bowled out in 77.2 overs for 227.Tom Taylor took 4 for 37.
Worcestershire were 53 for no wicket at the end of Day 1. Worcestershire went form 66 for 1 to 88 for 5. They couldn’t get a partnership going and were bowled out in 69.1 overs for 181. Chris Rushworth took 4 for 37.
Warwickshire were 53 for 1 at the end of Day 2, leading by 99 runs. Sam Hain and Ed Barnard put on 65 for the 5th wicket. Hain then shared a partnership of 67 with Chris Woakes. Woakes scored 42 and Hain was 87* from 174 balls. Warwickshire faced 90.5 overs and made 280. A lead of 326. Jacob Duffy took 5 for 75 in his 21.5 overs,
Worcestershire faced 23 overs on Day 3 and were 57 for 2. Only 38.2 overs were bowled on Day 4. Matthew Waite came in at 8 when Worcestershire were 148 for 7, he scored 44* from 55 balls. A draw was saved by both his innings and the weather.
Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire – Headingley, Leeds. Dom Bess won the toss for Yorkshire and put Nottinghamshire in to bat. Nottinghamshire won by 163 runs.
Nottinghamshire 228 All Out & 393 for 8 declared , Yorkshire 159 All Out & 299 All Out
Notts Opener and Captain Haseeb Hameed was out in the 6th over. and Notts were 9 for 1. His fellow opener Ben Slater and Freddie McCann then put on 56 for the 2nd wicket. Slater’s was the 3rd wicket to fall, he made 523 from 111 balls. Joe Clarke who’d come in at 4 and Lyndon James put on 71 for the 6th wicket. Clarke top scored with 64 from 151 balls. Notts were bowled out in 81.2 overs for 228. George Hill took 5 for 40 run his 20 overs.
Yorkshire were 10 for 2 at the end of Day 1. Things didn’t get much better in spite of David Malan scoring 64 from 45 balls. Yorkshire were bowled out in 44.3 overs for 159.
Nottinghamshire Faced 61 overs on Day 2 and were 227 for 3, They made 73 for the 1st wicket. Opener Ben Slater and Joe Clarke then put on 70 for the 3rd wicket. Slater scored 78 from 125 balls. Clarke was on 73* at the end of the day. Notts had a lead of 296. Clarke was out for 94 from 121 balls. Notts made 393 for 8 in 98 overs. A lead of 462.
Yorkshire faced 56.4 overs on Day 3 and were 176 for 5, trailing by 286. Adam Lyth and James Wharton put on 74 for the 2nd wicket. Wharton scored 58 from 99 balls. Liam Patterson- White took 3 wickets on the day. Yorkshire batted for a total of 120.3 overs George Hill and Matthew Revis put on 54 for the 6th wicket. Revis scored 45. Dillon Pennington took 5 for 106 in his 31 overs.
Division 2
Derbyshire v Kent – County Ground, Derby. Wayne Madsen won the toss for Derbyshire and elected to bat. Derbyshire won by an innings and 14 runs.
Derbyshire 587 for 5, Kent 326 All Out & 247 All Out
The first match to have a decent number of runs on Day 1 as I write! Derbyshire made 99 for the 1st wicket, David Lloyd was out for 50 from 94 balls. Opener Caleb Jewell and Harry Came then put on 196 for the 2nd wicket. Came scored 89 from 181 balls. Jewell was 163* as I write. Derbyshire were 352 for 2 form the 96 overs bowled on Day 1. Wayne Madsen and Jewell put on 176 for the 4th wicket. Madsen scored 100 from 134 balls. Jewell went on to score 232 from 361 balls. Madsen declared on 587 for 5, scored in 140 overs. Jake Ball went for 114 and poor Matt Parkinson conceded 204.
Kent lost Joe Denly for 3 in the 7th over, Opener Ben Compton and Daniel Bell-Kent lost Joe Denly for 3 in the 7th over, Opener Ben Compton and Daniel Bell-Drummond put on 125 for the 2nd wicket. Bell-Drummond scored 61 from 86 balks and Compton was 105* at the end of Day 2. Kent made 210 fo r3 in the 50 overs they faced on Day 2. Compton went on to sore 156 from 287 balls. Extras we’re the 3rd highest score with 37. Kent were bowled out in 98.5 overs for 326.
Kent were asked to follow on and were 157 for 3 after the 45 overs they faced on Day 3. Kent were bowled out in a total of 70.4 overs. Joe Deny and Ben Compton put on 52 for the 1st wicket. Tawanda Muyeye was the top scorer with 55 from 71 balls. Jake Ball didn’t bat after he retired hurt during Kent’s 1st innings.
Glamorgan v Middlesex – Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Toby Roland-Jones won the toss for Middlesex and put Glamorgan in to bat. Glamorgan won by 10 Wickets.
Glamorgan 383 All Out & 8 For No Wicket, Middlesex 155 All Out & 235 All Out
The second Division 2 match and the 2nd match of Day 1 where the team batting was still in at the start of Day 2. Glamorgan fell to 52 for 3, with MArnus Labuschagne being one of the 3. Captain Sam Northeast and Kiran Carlson then put on 227 for the 4th wicket. Carlson scored 109 from 150 balls. Sam Northeast’s was the 6th wicket to fall, he made 122 from 262 balls. Glamorgan were 334 for 7 at the end of Day 1. Glamorgan were bowled out in a total of 115.4 overs for 383. Ryan Higgins took 5 for 59 in his 24.4 overs.
Middlesex were bowled out in 52 overs for 155. Max Holden, who opened, top scored with 42. Andy Groin took 4 for 39.
Middlesex were asked to follow on and made 98 for the 1st wicket. Sam Robson made 66 from 58 balls. That was the only meaningful partnership in spite of 57 from 42 from Toby Roland-Jones. Middlesex scored 235. Matthew Kuhnemann took 6 for 53 in his 22.3 overs.
Glamorgan needed just 2.2 overs to secure the win.
Leicestershire v Lancashire – Uptonsteel County Ground, Leicester. Peter Handscomb won the toss for Leicestershire and put Lancashire in to bat. Leicestershire won by an innings and 3 runs.

Lancashire put on 74 for the 1st wicket, then struggled to form partnerships. Opener Luke Wells top scored with 36 from 102 balls. Lancs were bowled out in 77.4 overs for 206.
Leicestershire were 59 for 2 at the end of Day 1. Rehan Ahmed, in at 3 and Lewis Hill put on 256 for the 3rd wicket. Ahmed scored 136 from 197 balls. Hill made 119 from 179 balls. Ian Holland and Keeper Ben Cox put on 79 for the 5th wicket. Holland scored 50 from 91 balls. Leicestershire made 457 in 109.5 overs.
The 2nd Lancashire innings lasted slightly longer, 81.2 overs. That was largely down to Keaton Jennings who scored 112 from 203 balls. Logan van Beek took 4 for 61. To help Leicestershire to a win by an innings plus 3 runs.

Northamptonshire 469 All Out & 259 for 6 declared, Gloucestershire 370 for 8 declared & 214 for 6
Northamptonshire batted through Day 1 and were 327 for 6 at the end of the day. Ricardo Vasconcelos was out in the 5th over and Northants were 6 for 1. James Sales and Saif Zaib put on 148 for the 5th wcket. Sales scored 81 from 167 balls. Going into Day 2 Keeper Lewis McManus and Zaib put on 103 for the 7th wicket. Zaib scored 159 from 241 balls. Calvin Harrison and Liam Guthrie put on 90 for the 9th wicket. Harrison scored 63 from 118 balls. Northants were bowled out in 139.2 overs for 469.
Gloucestershire faced 52 overs on Day 2, Cameron Bancroft, opening scored 60 from 143 balls and they were 156 for 4 at the end of Day 2. Cameron Green who came in at 6scored 118* from 185 balls. He and Graeme van Buuren put on 79 for the 7th wicket. Cameron Bancroft declared after 111 overs, Gloucestershire were 379 for 8.
Northants faced 37 overs on Day 3 and were 158 for 4. They led Gloucs by 248 runs. James Sales and Saif Zaib had another good partnership, putting on 110 for the 5th wicket. Sales scored 70 from 89 balls and Zaib 56 from 65 balls. Luke Proctor declared after 49 overs.
Gloucestershire batted for 56.4 overs and scored 214 for 6. Opener and Captain Cameron Bancroft and Miles Hammond put on 98 for the 3rd wicket. Bancroft made 60 from 114 balls and Hammond 80 from 101 balls.
