At the start of the 2024 season I looked into start times for the competition, it seems a good time to check finish times over the same period of time, with the majority of games this week ruined by the weather. These are the dates for Day 4 each year.
- 2014 – 23rd September
- 2015 – 22nd September
- 2016 – 20th September
- 2017 – 25th September
- 2018 – 25th September
- 2019 – 23rd September
- 2020 – 23rd September
- 2021 – 28th September
- 2022 – 26th September
- 2023 – 26th September
- 2024 – 26th September
- 2025 – 27th September
September matches have been in the fixture list for a long time, 2010 saw the last matches played to 16th September, as they did in the year 2000. Looking back to 1990 the last games finished on September 21st. Food for thought for those who think the Hundred is the reason for September cricket.
I’m starting this on Day 4 and suspect I won’t have too much to write about, but here goes!
Division 1
Durham v Worcestershire – Banks Homes Riverside, Chester-le-Street. Alex Lees won the toss for Durham and put Worcestershire in to bat. Match Drawn.
Worcestershire 592 for 9, Durham 450 for 6
I find the decision to put Worcestershire in to bat a bizarre one considering the place Durham sit in the table. With a potential 5 batting points on offer I’d have thought they would have been going for them; with a draw the most likely result with the weather around. But in his wisdom Lees gave taht opportunity to his opposition. Worcestershire most definitley got some batting practice in, scoring 591 for 9 in 174 overs. with the One Day Cup Final approaching that was manna from heaven for a team looking at relegation should it happen this year. Opener Rehaan Edavalath (61 from 123 balls) and Dan Lategan (44) put on 84 for the 3rd wicket. Brett D’Oliveira (84 from 187 balls Gareth Roderick put on Roderick and Ben Gibbon (33) added 61 for the 6th. Roderick and Ethan Brookes added 109 for the 7th wicket. Roderick’s was the 7th wicket to fall, he scored 151 from 278 balls. Brookes and Tom Taylor (66 from 76 balls) put on 81 for the 9th wicket. Brookes made 100 from 134 balls.
Durham were 109 for 2 at lunchtime on Day 4. Emilio Gay and David Bedingham (58 from 91 balls) put on 122 for the 3rd wicket. Gay and Will Rhodes added 138 for the 4th. That wicket was Gay who scored 161 from 182 balls. Rhodes was 151* from 151 balls at the end of the match. Durham scored 450 in 86.4 overs to gain the maximum batting points.
Somerset v Hampshire – The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. Lewis Gregory won the toss and elected to bat. Match Drawn.
Somerset 454 for 8, Hampshire 172 All Out & 201 for 8
What chance these 2 teams faced each other days after a very good T20 Blast final! Somerset were the victors after an excellent innings from Will Smeed. Somerset fell to 99 for 5, before Tom Abell and Kasey Aldridge put on 221 for the 6th wicket. Abell scored 118 from 189 balls. Aldridge and Craig Overton (50* from 42 balls) added 107 for the 8th wicket. Aldridge made 180 from 233 balls. Somerset batted for 103 overs and scored 454 for 8. Taking the maximum batting points.
Hampshire were bowled out in 54.3 overs for 172. Jack Leach took 7 for 69 in his 24.3 overs. There was just one extra, a leg bye!
Hampshire fared better in their second innings to ‘save’ the draw. They batted for 126.5 overs and wewre 201 for 8 at the end of the match. Washington Sundar top scored with 46. Archie Vaughan took 6 for 96 in the 50 overs he bowled. 50!!
Surrey v Nottinghamshire – The Oval, London. Rory Burns won the toss and put Nottinghamshire in to bat. Nottinghamshire won by 20 runs.
Nottinghamshire 231 All Out & 256 All Out, Surrey 173 All Out & 294 All Out
This was a top of the table clash and televised by SKy Sports, it was the only place in the country that had cricket at times. Notts started this round trailing Surrey by a point, in spite of winning 5 games to Surrey’s 4. Theu lost wickets steadily and were bowled out in 77.4 overs for 231. Opener Ben Slater top scored with 50 from 99 balls. Gus Atkinson took 4 wicket.
Surrey’s innings was a shorter one as they were all out in 52.2 overs for 173. Opener/Captain Rory Burns top scored with 47.
Notts 2nd innings lasted just 67 overs asd they were bowled out for 256. Liam Patterson-White top scored with 58 from 90 balls. Matt Fisher took 6 for 73 in his 20 overs.
Surrey trailed by 314 as they went into their 2nd innings. They made a good start and were 74 for 1, but wickets fell steadily. Dan Lawrence toip scored with 50 from 56 balls. Surrey were bowled out in 71.2 overs, they fell short by 20 runs. Josh Tongue took 5 for 100 in his 21.2 overs.
Sussex v Yorkshire – The 1st Central County Ground, Hove/. Jonny Bairstow won the toss for Yorkshire and elected to bat. Match Drawn.
Yorkshire 194 All Out & 109 for 3 , Sussex 250 All Out
With the nature of ythe competition this year and a very tight table, this was a ‘bottom’ of the table clash with Yorkshire in 7th and Sussex 6th. Yorkshire went from 69 for 1 to 194 all out as they were bowled out in 64.1 overs. Opener Adam Lyth top scored with 47.
Sussex batted for 790.2 overs reaching 250 and a batting point. Tom Alsop top scored with 29. George Hill took 4 wickets.

Warwickshire v Essex – Edgbaston, Birmingham. Alex Davies won the toss for Warwickshire and put Essex in to bat. Match Drawn.
Essex 325 for 5.
Another strange choice at the toss, this gane clearly wasn’t going to be completed. But, as an Essex fan, thank you Alex Davies! There were in fact just 104 overs in the match and Essex batted throughout. They reached 325 for 5. Ben Allison fell short of another century by just 2 runs, he scored 98 from 175 balls. Michael Pepper was 54* from 94 balls.
Division 2
Derbyshire v Glamorgan – The Central Co-Op County Ground, Derby. Wayne Madsen won the toss and put Glamorgan in to bat. Match Drawn.
There was a total of 93.3 overs bowled in this match, so, another strange decision at the toss for me. Glamorgan batted for 88.3 of those overs and scored 259. Kiran Carlson (94 from 178 balls) and Timm van der Gugten (37) put on 94 for the 7th wcket. Luis Reece took 4 wickets.
Derbsyshire faced just 5 overs and were 17 for no wicket when teh draw was confirmed. That result also confirmed Glamorgan’s promotion. to jsut what we and they, do not know!
Gloucestershire v Northamptonshire – Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol. James Bracey won the toss for Gloucestershire and put Northamptonshire in to bat. Gloucestershire won by 7 Wickets.
Northamptonshire 206 All Out & 192 All Out. Gloucestershire 241 All Out & 158 for 3
A positive result! Which makes 1 in each division! Northamptonshire were bowled out in 63.5 overs, they scored 206. Saif Zaib scored 76 of those runs from 112 balls.
Gloucestershire’s innings lasted one ball more! In their 64 overs they scored 241, Jack Taylor top scored with 63 from 64 balls.
Northamptonshire were bowled out in 50.2 overs for 192. Justin Broad top scored with 49 from 104 balls.
Gloucestershire batted for 24 overs and were 158 for 3, Ollie Price scored 54 from 58 balls.

Middlesex batted for 38.5 overs and were 99 for 4 when the game was declared a draw.
Leicestershire v Kent – Uptonsteel County Ground, Leicester. Harry Finch won the toss and put Leicestershire in to bat. Match Drawn.
Leicestershire 459 for 7, Kent 17 for No Wicket
Rishi Patel, opening scored114 from 143 balls, taking him to 3000 First Class runs as he reached his 50! Patel and Lewis Hill (54 from 87 balls) put on 99 for the 3rd wicket. Shan Masood (9-0 from 106 balls) and Keeper Ben Cox (93 from 86 balls) added 161 for the 6th wicket. Leicestershire scored 459 in 84.1 overs achieving full batting points and confirming their position as Champions of Division 2, massive for a county that went 37 matches between September 2012 and June 2015 then again in 2022 without a single win. It has been 23 years since they were a part of Division 1. Congratulations to all involved!
Kent batted for just 9.1 overs and scored 17 runs.
