In the few days before Round 2 started we saw some record high temperatures, of course those had long disappeared by game day. This was a day when winning the toss would make a huge difference that worked for some, not for others. Esssex were the 1st team to win in Round 1, they were the 1st to lose in Round! Sport has a knack of bringing us fans crashing down! The weather on Day 3 is going to see me press publsih before 2 matches are completed, I can’t see past a Draw at the Oval and the St Lawrence Ground. I’ll update those matches tomorrow. And of course there were indeed a couple of Draws down South!
Division 1
Essex v Somerset – Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Chelmsford. Craig Overton won the toss for Somerset and put Essex in to bat. Somerset won by 10 Wickets
Essex 149 All Out & 245 All Out Somerset 348 All Out & 49 for no Wicket.
Having been the first team to claim a win in week 1 of this years’ Championship Essex’s Day 1 could well mean they’re the first to lost this week! It was clearly very hard goingon Day 1. Paul Walter was the first to be heading back to the dressing rooms having faced a testing 22 balls for 2 runs. New signing Wiaan Mulder lasted 2 balls. He’d played a poor shot to lose his wicket in Southampton, I was quite surprised to see him walking in at 3. Dean Elgar (41) and Charlie Allison (49) put up some resistance byt Elgar played a crazy shot to be dismissed just before lunch, last weeks superstar lasted just 3 balls and Essex were 77 for 4 at lunch. Essex were bowled out in just 51 overs for 149.
Somerset opened with Jack Leach with Josh Thomas, Tom Kohler Cadmore had been replaced by Will Smeed having hurt his hand taking a catch, but even so that seemed to be a strange choice! Leach was bowled in the 3rd over, Tom Lammonby was out for 2 having faced 2 balls. Thomas followed him back in the 6th over with 4 to his name.. James Rew came in at 4 and scored an effortless 48 from 67 balls, he was a joy to watch, even for this Essex fan. Tom Abell’s was the 4th wicket to fall, I had to leave befopre the end of Day 1 so missed CRaig Overton scoring 50* fron 36 balls, I can’t say I was unhappy about that! Rain is falling in Chelmsford as Day 2 is about to start. However play went on for Day 2, Overton made a total of 141 from 180 ball. Somerset scored 348 in 92.3 overs.
Essex faced 38 overs on Day 2 and were 131 for 3 at the end of Day 2. They had been 45 for 3, Opener Paul Walter (63*) and Matt Critchley (53*) put on 86 by the end of the day. I was bWalyterack for Day 3 to watch another flurry of wickets. Walter top scored with 70, but Essex were bowled out in 72.3 overs. All I can say. is at least they avoided losing by an innings and!
Somerset had lost Lewis Goldsworthy who was replaced by Archie Vaughan, handily an Opening Battter. He sscored 41 of the required runs, they needed just 5.4 overs to get the win. Their song in their dressing room was loud and full of joy! I imagine Essex’s will have been a quiet room!
Nottinghamshire v Glamorgan – Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Kiran Carlson won the toss for Glamorgan and put Nottinghamshire to bat. Nottinghamshire won by 192 runs.

Glamorgan faced 32 overs on Day 1 and were 81 for 4 having been 4 for 2 in the 5th over. Things didn’t improve for Glamorgan on Day 2 and they were bowked out for 113 in a total of 48 overs. Fergus O’Neill and Brett Hutton both took 4 wickets.
