This roiund brought every county up to 5 games played. Every single captain who won the toss, bar one, put their opposition in to bat. That was Derbyshire who were playing Northamptonshire and it proved to be the right choice! Th egame at Trent Bridge turned into batting practice, I really think the points system needs to be reviwed! I’m coming late to this so a shorter version than usual, with the Century Makers and 5 Wicket Takers to come later.
Division 1
Essex v Hampshire – Ambassador Cruise Ground, Chelmsford. Tom Westley won the toss for Essex and put Hampshire in to bat. Essex won by 6 Wickets.
Hampshire 235 All Out & 214 All Out, Essex 273 All Out & 178 for 4
Hants fell to 33 for 3 before Ben Mayes (30) and Jake Lehman (89) put on 55 for the 4th wicket. Lehman, who batted really well, then shared a partnership of 105 with Ben Brown (73). Hants were bowled out in 71.3 overs for 235. Sam Cook and Wiaam Mulder both took 3 wickets.
Essex had a very similar start to their innings and were 53 for 4. then 80 for 5. Matt Critchley (27) and Wiaan Mulder (54) put on 46 for the 6th wicket. It took a fab innings from Simon Harmer to take Essex past Hants score. He and Jamie Porter added 81 for the last wicket, Porter faced 38 balls and prodiuced 35 dots. Harmer was 80* from 90 overs. Essex scored 273.
Hants 2nd innings lasted 79.5 overs, Nick Gubbins with 71 was the top scorer and Ben Brown again went past 50, scoring 57 in this innings. They were bowled out for 214. Cook took another 3 wickets. Harmer took 4 and 2 catches, including his 2nd C&B of the match.
Essex required 177 to win, they took 41.5 overs to score the required runs and lost 4 wickets. Matt Critchley scored more than half the runs, making 90 from 73 balls.
Glamorgan v Somerset – Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. Kiran Carlson won the toss and put Somerset in to bat. Glamorgan won by 2 Wickets.
Somerset 354 All Out & 157 All Out, Glamorgan 229 All Out & 285 for 8
James Rew opened for Somerset and was out for 4 having faced 7 balls. Josh Thomas (71) and Tom Lammonby (45) put on 133 for the 2nd wicket. Tom Abell (86 and Craig Overton (33) shared a 6th wicket partnership of 71. Abell and `Lewis Gregory (37) then put on 66 for the 7th wicket. Somerset batted f0r 102.5 overs and scored 354.
Glamorgan lost steady wickets and were 93 for 5. Ben Kellaway (59) and Keeper Chris Cooke (39) put on 80 for the 6th wicket. They were bowled out in 71.1 overs for 229.
Something incredibly memorable happened in Somerset’s 2nd innings. 18 year old Tom Norton on his debut, took a hat-trick, despatching Rew, Lammonby and Archie Vaughan for a Duck! Somerset were 7 for 3. They then fell to 63 for 8. Lewis Gregory top scored with 45. Somerset were bowled out for 157 in 50.2 overs.
Glamorgan battled hard in their 2nd innings, Asa Tribe scored 52 from 106 balls, Ryan Hadley (50) and Sean Dickeson (76) put on 114 for the 6th wicket. Galmorgan batted for 122.2 overs and made it! They scored 285 for 8 and the win was theirs!
Nottinghamshire v Surrey – Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Rory Burns won the toss and put Nottinghamshire in to bat. Match Drawn.
Nottinghamshire 415 All Out & 414 for 4, Surrey 449 All Out
Notts lost both openers early and were 18 for 2. Ben Duckett (42) and Joe Clarke put on 87 for the 3rd wicket. Clarke then shared a partnership of 146 with Jack Haynes (82). Clarke and and Fergus O’Neill added 61 for the 9th wicket. Clarke made 129 from 224 balls. The last wicket partnership of Ollie Stone (38) and Josh Tongue (37) put on 74. Notts made 415 in 118 overs.
Anytbing Notts could do, so could Surrey. Opener Dom Sibley (77) and Jamie Smith (37) put on 92 for the 2nd wicket. Sibley and Adam Thomas (46) shared 60 for the 4th wicket. Dam Lawrence made 104 from 152 balls and shared a partnership of 108 for the 5th wicket. Sean Abbot (7) and Jordan Clark (54) put on 71 for the 7th. Surrey made 449 in 138.3 and this game was heading for a Draw!
Notts took the batting practice opportunity, batting for 107 overs, scoring 414 for 4. Ben Duckett took full advantage scoring 203* from 311 balls. He and Ben Slater (Ben is almost as popular a name as Tom!) put on 99 for the 2nd wicket. Clarke (59) and Duckett added 117 for the 3rd wicket. Jack Haynes (53) and Duckett put on 122 for the 4th wicket.
Sussex v Leicestershire – County Ground, Hove. Ollie Robinson won the toss for Sussex and put Leicestershire in to bat. Sussex won by 7 Wickets.
Leicestershire 318 All Out & 232 All Out, Sussex 430 All Out & 131 for 3.
The Leicestershire openers , Rishi Patel (45) and Jake Weatherald (43) put on 92 for the 1st wicket. Wickets fell steadily, Ian Holland top scored with 63 and Tom Scriven scored 50. There werre 41 extras! Leics scored 328 in 88.4 overs. jack Carson took 4 wickets.
Sussex were 18 for 2 before Opener Dan Hughes and Jack Leaning (50) put on 178 for the 3rd wicket. Hughes went on to score 136 from 162 balls. Keeper John Simpson and Charlie Tear (44) added 88 for the 6th wicket. Simpson went on to score 114 from 141 ball. Sussex batted for 113.4 overs and scored 430.
Leics fell to 37 for 3 before Opener Rishi Patel (56) and Joonny Tattersall (54) put on 66 for the 4th wicket. Leics were bowled out in 80.5 overs for 232.
Sussex required just 15.3 overs to score the required runs to get their 3rd win of the season. They were 131 for 3 and had the win under their belts.
Warwickshire v Yorkshire – Edgbaston, Birmingham. Jonny Bairstow won the toss for Yorkshire and put Warwickshire in to bat. Warwickshire won by 377 runs.
Yorkshire 152 All Out & 171 All Out, Warwickshire 147 All Out & 553 for 6.
Warwicks were bowled out in just 55 overs in their 1st innings, they scored 147, Sam Hain scored 57 of those runs. Jack White took 4 wickets.
Yorkshire’s 1st innings lasted just 45.2 overs, they were bowled out for 152. James Wharton and Jonny Bairstow both scored 40. Oliver Hannon-Dalby back at Edgbaston took 4 wickets.
Things were very different in Warwicks 2nd innings, they batted for 141 overs and declared on 553 for 6. Opener Rob Yates scored 81, Dan Mousley 70 and Sam Hain went big with 164 from 319 balls.
Yorkshire were bowled out in 53.1 overs for 171. Matthew Revis top scored with 41. Ethan Bamber took 4 wickets.
Division 2
Derbyshire v Northamptonshire – The Central Co-op County Ground, Derby. Wayne Madsen won the toss and elected to bat. Derbyshire won by an innings and 113 runs.

Derbyshire were the only toss winning team who elected to bat, and wow that worked! There were partnerships galore and 2 Centuries! Harry Came scored 73, Matthew Montgomery 54, Caleb Jewell 94 and Wayne Madsen 59. Martin Andersson scored 106 from 132 balls and Keeper Brooke Guest 141 from 174 balls. They put on 241 for the 6th wicket.
Northants had a Century maker in their line up, Calvin Harrison scored 107 from 269 balls as he saw those around him fall. They were bowled out for 228 in 95.5 overs. Bdn Aitchison took 4 wickets.
Northants faced an uphill battle and they fell quite short! They were bowled out in 122 overs for 263. Nathan McSweeney scored 62 and George Bartlett 65 but that just delayed the inevitable. Zak Chappell took 4 wickets.
Lancashire v Middlesex – Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester. Leus du Plooy won the toss for Middlesex and put Lancashire in to bat. Middlesex won by 6 Wickets.
Lancashire 201 All Out & 84 All Out, Middlesex 169 All Out & 117 for 4.
Opener Keaton Jennings top scored with 67 as Lancashrie were bowled out for 201 in 67.2 overs.
Coincidentally Leus du Plooy also scored 67 as Middlesex’s top scorer as they were bowled out for 169 in 43.2 overs.
Lancashire scored just 84 in their 2nd innings, they lasted just 38.4 overs. Ryan Higgins and Naavya Sharma each took 4 wickets.
Middlesex required 21.5 overs to get this game won. Ben Geddes (yet another Ben!) scored 73 and his team were 117 for 4 when the game was won.
Worcestershire v Durham – New Road, Worcestershire. Alex Lees won the toss for Durham and put Worcestershire in to bat. Durham won by 9 Wickets.
Worcestershire 308 All Out & 102 All Out, Durham 268 All Out & 143 for 1.
Worcestershire fell to 52 for 4, Adam Hose (59) and Brett D’Oliveira (41) put on 97 for the 5th wicket. Jack Hime who came in at 10 top scored with 63. Worcs batted for 111.4 overs and scored 308. Ben Raine took 5 for 64 in his 30.4 overs.
Durham lost 2 early wickets and were 35 for 2, Emilio Gay (28) and David Bedingham (83) put on 55 for the 3rd wicket. Worcs were bowled out in 74.3 oevrs for 268.
Callum Pakinson was the stroy of Worcs 2nd innings, he took 5 for 13 in his 10 overs as Worcs were bowled out in 39.5 overs for 102.
Durahm lost Alex Lees in the 1st over and were 4 for 1. Ben McKinney (87) and Emilio Gay (51) took Durtham to the win in 24.2 overs.
Gloucestershire v Kent – Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol. Daniel Bell-Drummond won the toss for Kent and put Gloucestershire in to bat. Kent won by 2 Wickets.

Gloucs lost Opener Cameron Bancroft in the 10th over and were 27 for 1. Ollie Price (50) and Ben Charlsworth (85) put on 117 for the 2nd wicket. James Bracey (57) and Tommy Boorman (49) added 115 for the 5th wicket. Gloucs scored 325 in 91.1 overs. James Taylor took 6 for 52 in 23.1 overs.
Kent lost early wickets and were 39 for 3. Ben (!) Dawkins (65) and Tawanda Muyeye (90) put on 102 for the 4th wcket. Kent batted for 103.5 overs and scored 327.
Cameron Bancroft came good in Gloucs 2nd innings, he scored 83 and put on 70 for the 3rd wicket with Miles Hammond (33). Gloucs scored 262 in 85.1 overs. James Taylor took another 4 wickets. Taking him to 10 for the game.
Kent had a battle on theirt hands after 24 for 2 tuned into 64 for 3. Daniel Bell-Drummond (38) and Tawanda Muyeye put on 82 for the 4th wicket, Muyeye and Keeper CHris Benjaim (41) added 68 for the 5th wicket. .Muyeye scored 108 from 129 balls. Kent kept their fans waiting, they atted for 70.4 overs, scoring 261 for 8. Giving them their 2nd win of the campaign.
